The IELTS Speaking test consists of 3 parts that are completed within a time frame of 11 to 14 minutes. To achieve the desired score, test takers need to focus on controlling the 4 scoring criteria of the IELTS Speaking test:

  1. Pronunciation
  2. Coherence & Cohesion
  3. Lexical Resources (Vocabulary)
  4. Grammar Range & Accuracy

If lucky, test takers can freely talk about a topic they are comfortable with. However, if they encounter difficult and unfamiliar topics, it can be challenging to generate ideas and speak while effectively addressing the scoring criteria mentioned above.

Therefore, it is important to come up with ways to develop ideas and answer the examiner’s questions. Here are 3 ways to enhance IELTS Speaking answers:

1. Provide Examples:

Using examples not only supports the main idea but also opens up various directions for developing the speech.

Example: For the topic “Hobbies,” if you choose to talk about “Listening to Music” and find it difficult to explain the reason for liking it, you can provide examples of favorite genres or specific songs and talk more about their content or interesting aspects.

2. Discuss Benefits:

When facing questions about the importance or significance of a particular topic, it is helpful to immediately think of discussing the benefits that the topic brings.

Example: Using the same “Hobbies” topic, if you choose to talk about “jogging,” you can mention the physical benefits such as staying in shape, keeping fit, or getting in shape, as well as the mental benefits such as relaxation, unwinding, or relieving stress after intense study or work periods.

3. Discuss the Opposite:

For longer parts like Speaking Part 2, comparing with the opposite side can make it easier to answer and provide more opportunities to showcase a rich vocabulary to impress the examiner.

Example: “You don’t need to put in a lot of effort to start jogging, unlike other forms of exercise which may require a range of equipment and facilities. Anyone can take up walking as it is already part of our daily routine.”

By effectively using these techniques, test takers can extend their IELTS Speaking answers in a simple and effective manner.
